Western Carolina University marks hunger week (new window)

CULLOWHEE — Western Carolina University will participate in two community service projects, a film show, guest presentations and discussions and a potluck dinner as part of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, which begins Sunday.

Staff members will volunteer at the Community Table in Sylva on Monday; faculty, administrators and students will help out at MANNA FoodBank in Asheville on Nov. 19.

“The Pursuit of Happyness,” a Will Smith film about overcoming homelessness, will be screened at 8 p.m. Monday at A.K. Hinds University Center.

On Nov. 19, Jeanne Naber, coordinator of the Haywood County Meals on Wheels, will make a public presentation in the University Center theater, 12:30-1:50 p.m., with a discussion to follow.

The final event for the week will be a potluck dinner, 6-8 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Cullowhee Methodist Church on campus. This event is free and open to the public and will feature live entertainment featuring a WCU student brass quintet as well as speakers, testimonials and educational information.

The National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness is a project of the Center for Public Interest Research, Inc.
