FORT COLLINS - Colorado State University students
will use donated canned food items as building materials for CSU’s
annual CANStruction to raise awareness about the size and scope of
hunger in the community. CANStruction will be held at CSU's Homecoming
Festival from 1:30-6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9 in the Lory Student Center
Sculpture Garden.
CANStruction is a part of the annual Cans Around the Oval food drive
which kicked off Sept. 17 and concludes Oct. 14 with the final
collection event.
The inspiration behind CANStruction is to be creative while also
providing a visual representation of the amount of food raised by Cans
Around the Oval. A total of 15 student teams will construct their
representations into hunger-related topics while following this year’s
Homecoming theme, “Celebrating the Past, Building the Future.”
Structures are judged based on creativity and the amount of monetary
donations that the structure raises. Participants are encouraged to
invite friends, family and alumni to vote for their structure with
donations. All proceeds are given to the Food Bank of Larimer County as
part of Cans Around the Oval. Last year’s CANStruction raised
approximately 10,000 pounds of food for the Food Bank.
Cans Around the Oval, sponsored by the CSU’s student organization
SLiCE - Student Leadership, Involvement and Community Engagement - is
the largest one day food drive in Northern Colorado. This year’s goal
is to collect more than 100,000 pounds of food, topping last year’s
total of 84,000 pounds.
