Dear Senator, I urge you to preserve critical housing assistance for low income families and support the Sense of the Senate amendment from Senators Sarbanes and Collins to ensure full funding for Section 8 vouchers during the upcoming vote on 2004 Senate VA-HUD appropriations. I am very concerned that, under the current House language, 63,000 families would lose their Section 8 housing vouchers in 2004. If this cut remains in the final budget, this would be the first time in history that Congress has cut existing Section 8 families from the program. Safe, affordable housing is essential to strong communities, healthy families, and a growing economy. However, as housing prices in the U.S. continue to skyrocket, many working families and senior citizens are unable to afford homes in their communities. The Section 8 program provides critical housing assistance to 2.1 million American households, 75% of whom are families with children or senior citizens. If the House budget language passes, up to 63,000 of these families will lose their vouchers and face the possibility of homelessness. Please help stop these families from losing their vouchers. I strongly urge you to support the amendment from Senators Sarbanes and Collins to support full funding for all existing Section 8 vouchers in 2004. Sincerely,
