18th Annual Student Conference
on Hunger and Homelessness
"Planting SEEDS of Social Change"
Seattle University in
Washington
November 11-13, 2005
MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW!
In
July 2005, the leaders of the eight wealthiest countries in the world, met in
Scotland to discuss ways to end extreme poverty in Africa. It was the first
time in history that the most powerful world leaders stood together against
hunger and extreme poverty. After the eyes of the world watched these leaders
commit to addressing these problems, it is now our job to take action on the
local, national, and international levels to ensure that our governments do
not waiver on the path toward change. Hunger and homelessness are seeping their
way into public consciousness. As determined students and administrators in
the fight against hunger and homelessness, we can continue Planting SEEDs of
Social Change until we create a world free from hunger and homelessness.
You can take action today
by registering to attend the 18th Annual Conference of the National Student
Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness. As a conference participant, you will
learn the most up-to-date information on domestic and international hunger and
homelessness related issues and acquire new skills and strategies to organize
effective programs and campaigns on your campus and in your local community.
This year's conference is
especially unique with its location on the West Coast at Seattle University.
Seattle is a leading university in social justice activism, recently hosting
Tent City 3, a temporary encampment that provides shelter, support, and safety
to approximately 100 men and women suffering from homelessness.
What You Can Do NOW to Make Sure You Can Attend
1) Contact the student
activities office, student government, academic departments or professors, and
the community service center to ask them to sponsor you. They may have discretionary
funds left from this academic year that they would be willing to use to sponsor
you. If so, contact us immediately, so we can process your registration or register
online after June 1st.
2) Make sure your student
group has money set aside to send students to conferences. Determine what you
need to do to be eligible for this funding.
3) Contact student government
to determine what the process is for applying for conference sponsorship in
the fall. Student government often appropriates money to individuals for conferences
because they are helpful to the development of student leaders and activists.
4) If your organization
has a national affiliate, contact the national headquarters to ask for their
support. Many organizations have scholarships available for students to attend
conferences.
